Reading contest aimed at teaching about Prophet Muhammad launched in Ankara
A nationwide reading contest titled “Everybody reads about him” was launched with an event attended by more than 20,000 people in Ankara late on Thursday as part of a campaign to help the Turkish public acquire greater knowledge about the life of Prophet Muhammad. The campaign was first announced by Peygamber Yolu (The Prophet's Path Association) during a press conference held at the İstanbul Congress Center (ICC) in early January. Representatives of Peygamber Yolu stated in their press release that the team came up with the idea while seeking an answer to the question, “What can we do to better learn about and understand Prophet Muhammad?” According to Ali Demirel, chairman of Peygamber Yolu, people today are desperately in need of peace which was widespread when Prophet Muhammad was alive. Demirel said that 40 academics, including himself, established the association with the aim of reviving this peaceful environment. The website of the association, www.peygamberyolu.com, was set up to provide an accurate guide to the life of the Prophet, said Demirel. Selman Kuzu, deputy chairman of Peygamber Yolu, in his opening speech at the event said the campaign, which aims to better educate the public about Prophet Muhammad, his moral values, his pacifist nature, what he achieved and what he went through in his efforts to promote Islam, will start from Anatolia and spread to the whole world as books will be translated into many different languages. He further spoke about the campaign by saying every Muslim should have a book thoroughly detailing Prophet Muhammad's life on their nightstands. Kuzu had previously said anyone who wants to know and understand Prophet Muhammad from trustworthy sources should sign up for the project on the website www.herkesonuokuyor.com, and that the project offered examinations in three categories: middle school level, high school level and adult level. Middle school students will be tested from the book “Efendiler Efendisi Hz. Muhammed” by Rahime Kaya, while high school students will answer questions related to Reşit Haylamaz's “Efendimiz” and adults will take an exam from “Sonsuz Nur” (Eternal Light) by Fethullah Gülen, Kuzu explained. The exams will take place in various provinces between March 31 and April 12 for candidates, who will study one of the three books from Jan. 7 to March 24. Those who score highly in the exams will be receive a prize. Following the local exams, there will be a central exam across Turkey. The 63 most outstanding candidates will receive laptops, tablet computers, gold and umrah trips as prizes. The results will be announced in April and the prizes are expected to be distributed in May. Millions of people are expected to participate in the contest. Kuzu called on the public to support the project both financially and spiritually. Kuzu noted that prominent Islamic scholar Gülen's book “Sonsuz Nur,” which depicts the life of Prophet Muhammad, has been translated into 36 different languages. “The target is to translate the book into all existing languages over the world and make the Prophet's name known to everyone in the world. ”Highlighting the significance of the task they have undertaken, he said they were currently working on a movie project in order to use all means to introduce the Prophet to the world.
