What incentives are offered in the Gülen Movement?
For most participants, internalized norms or values are defined by the service ethic, which mostly draws upon religious conviction and conscience and is maintained over time. This means that people work for what are called “value incentives”, or “purposive incentives”, or “doing the right thing.”
The Gülen Movement also does not rely on incentives of solidarity, or the self-preservation of the group and its solidarity. If incentives and solidarity were the sole reason for its existence, one could not explain its influence on people in the outside world. There are value incentives and these cannot be explained by self-interest.
