Opportunities for Sincerity and Guidance in the Era of Discord and Egotism

As you all know, the Qur'an says that the hypocrites will be at the lowest place in Hell, even lower than the disbelievers: Münafık, Kur'an-ı Kerim'in ifadesi ile de çok iyi bildiğiniz gibi, Cehennem'de en aşağı derekede, kâfirlerin de altındadır:
'Surely the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire; and you will never find for them any helper (against the Fire)' (An-Nisa 4:145). "Münafıklar, Cehennem'de, kâfirlerin de altında, en derin derekededirler" (Nisâ Sûresi, 4:145).
Hypocrites are more dangerous than disbelievers because they appear to be believers and utilise religious arguments, but in reality, work on behalf of disbelief. İki yüzlülük yaptığından, dindar görünüp dinsizlik hesabına yarış atı gibi koştuğundan, hatta dinî değerleri, kutsalları kendi düşüncesi hesabına birer argüman olarak kullandığından, kâfirden daha tehlikelidir münafık.
The people of today should stay away from discord and be wary of hypocrites. Günümüzün insanına düşen şey, nifaktan uzak olmak ve münafıklara karşı teyakkuzda bulunmaktır.
They can appear around the world at any time. Dünyanın değişik yerlerinde her zaman, her yerde karşılarına da çıkabilir bunlar.
However, I think that hypocrites mainly appear in places where Islamic thought and emotions prevail.
For disbelievers express their disbelief confidently in places where there is disbelief. Zira inkârcılar, güçlü ve kuvvetli oldukları yerde küfürlerini açıkça ortaya koymuşlardır.
Disbelievers such as Abu Jahl, Ibn Abu Muayt and Walid were not hypocrites, because they were powerful enough to do whatever they wished and they could oppress anybody who did not think like them. Ebû Cehil, Utbe, Şeybe, İbn Ebî Muayt, Velid gibi kimseler nifak gibi bir şey yapma lüzumunu duymamışlardır; çünkü hâkimdirler, güçlüdürler, istediklerini yapmaktadırlar, kendileri gibi düşünmeyenleri zincire vurmaktadırlar.
However, when Muslims gained power in Medina, hypocrisy began to sprout. Fakat Medine-i Münevvere'de, Müslümanlar, güçlü hale gelince nifak düşüncesi de boy atmaya başlamıştır.
Up until our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, transformed Yathrib into Medina, the centre of civilization, the hypocrites were expecting ranks.
They were after ranks and power, but when the crown found its True Owner, peace and blessings be upon him, they were unable to overcome their disappointment. Onların bekledikleri şey -esasen- bir taç idi, taçta sorguç idi; fakat o, Gerçek Sahibini (sallallâhu aleyhi ve sellem) bulunca, bunu katiyen sindiremediler, hazmedemediler.
This is a criterion; there are always people that expect certain things.
They expect people to applaud them, acknowledge them both in the Muslim and the non-Muslim world. Beklerler ki âlem, onları alkışlasın, takdir etsin; ister İslam dünyasında, isterse Müslüman olmayan dünyada.
However, as Bediüzzaman says, 'This is the era of egocentrism' and therefore the era of hypocrites, hence hypocrites appear more frequently in places where Islamic thoughts and emotions dominate or serve a purpose.
That is, when they display an attitude in line with those thoughts and feelings, they grow tall and develop in places where they can drag crowds of people along with them.
Thus, they make the most of these arguments and the Muslims fall for the hypocrites.
That is why Bediüzzaman says: Onun için Hazreti Pîr şöyle der:
'We need general peace and general forgiveness together with equal opportunity; so that individuals do not see each other as harmful individuals that will in turn result in discord. "İşte sulh-u umumî, afv-ı umumî ve ref'-i imtiyaz lâzım; tâ ki biri bir imtiyaz ile başkasına haşerat nazarıyla bakmakla nifak çıkmasın.
I don't want to sound presumptuous, but I say: Fahr olmasın, derim:
We are true Muslims; we may be deceived but will not deceive. Biz ki hakikî Müslümanız; aldanırız, fakat aldatmayız.
We will not resort to lies in exchange for our lives.' Bir hayat için, yalana tenezzül etmeyiz."
I think, even if we are tricked fifty times we must say, 'positive thinking without absolute trust.'
Yes, Bediüzzaman says, 'positive thinking without absolute trust'.   Evet, Hazreti Pîr "hüsnüzan, adem-i itimâd" diyor.
We are Muslims, that is, we could be deceived, but can never deceive others.
Why? Neden?
We go by what people say and how they appear. Yani, biraz dışa göre hareket ederiz;
If they declare this verbally, it is not in our hands to split open their heart and check if they are sincere. dil, söylüyorsa, ses ve soluk, o istikâmette çıkıyorsa, "yarıp kalbe bakma"ya kimsenin gücü yetmez.
And this is what our noble Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, says. Bunu da Efendimiz (aleyhi ekmelüttehâyâ) buyurur.
And to whom? Hem de kime?
The son of Zayd ibn Haritha, a man whom he loved.
When Usama was battling a polytheist he cornered him under a tree. When the polytheist noticed that he was cornered he said, 'There is no deity but God and Muhammad is His Messenger.' Hazreti Üsame, bir müşriği sıkıştırdığı zaman bir ağacın altında, o adam sıkışınca, "Lâ ilâhe illallah, Muhammedun rasûlullah" der.
Usama, according to his judgement says, 'He said this out of fear of his life. O Hazret (radıyallâhu anh) kendi şahsî içtihadı ile, "Bu, korkusundan dolayı söyledi bunu.
We were battling, he was the enemy!' He then kills that man. Savaşıyorduk; düşman bu!" der, onu öldürür orada.
When the news reaches God's Messenger he asks: Bu haber, Efendimiz'e ulaşınca, Efendimiz (sallallâhu aleyhi ve sellem) sorar:
'Why did you kill him?' "Niye öldürdün onu?"
Usama replies, 'O Messenger of God! He said out of fear of our arms!', our noble Prophet then says, ''Did you split open his heart and check?' Hazreti Üsâme "Sıkıştığından dolayı öyle dedi!" cevabını verince, Efendimiz buyururlar ki, "Yarıp kalbine mi baktın!"
See; this is the point in question for everyone.
If the tongue is saying God, Messenger, Religion and Piety', one cannot say, 'I do not believe you!' Ağzı "Allah!" diyorsa, "Peygamber!" diyorsa, "Din!" diyorsa, "Diyanet!" diyorsa, "Ben sana inanmıyorum!" diyemezsin.
Because you will be questioned by Him, by the inhabitants of the heavens, 'Did you split open his heart and check?'
How do you know? Maybe he said it from the heart!' Ne biliyorsun belki kalbinden dedi!"
This is the 'positive thinking'. İşte bu, hüsnüzan.
However, did he say it from the heart or did he trust the matter to the tongue and lips only? Fakat hakikaten kalbinden mi dedi, yoksa meseleyi dile-dudağa emanet edip öyle mi söyledi?
So then, 'positive thinking without absolute trust'. O zaman da "hüsnüzan, adem-i itimâd".
You should not turn your back before testing and applying certain filters; as you may be stabbed in the back. Test etmeden, birkaç defa onu imbikten geçirmeden sırtını dönmemelisin; hançer yiyebilirsin sırtından.
Yes, you should not turn your back, or you may be stabbed in the back. Evet, sırtını dönmemelisin, hançer yiyebilirsin sırtından.
You must not seat them on the throne of Shah Ismail; as you may receive a dagger in the back. Elinden tutup bir Şah İsmail koltuğuna oturtmamalısın, sırtından yiyebilirsin bir hançer.
That is why it is difficult to manage, know, and analyse the feelings of hypocrites.
And if you cannot analyse them you cannot make a decision, you cannot synthesise their thoughts.
An analysis is necessary before a conclusion.
It is a struggle to analyse that mannerism. O tavra göre tahlilde bulunmada çok zorlanırsınız:
Sometimes they will be at the Ka'ba, facing the Multazam in tears. Bazen Kâbe'de, Mültezim'e yüzünü koymuş ağlarken görürsünüz.
At times you may find them rubbing their face upon the Holy Black Stone saying, 'How great!' Bazen Hacerü'l-Es'ad'e yüzünü sürüyor bulursunuz; "Sana kurban olayım!" der.
But their hearts are filthier than Abu Jahl's, Utba's and Shayba's hearts. Fakat kalbi, Ebu Cehil'den daha kirlidir, Utbe'den daha kirlidir, Şeybe'den daha kirlidir.
Even at the Ka'ba, they would expect to be applauded; they expect appreciation and to hear people chanting, 'Long live! There is nobody like you!' Kâbe'de bile ıslık çalınıp alkışlanmayı bekler; orada da herkes takdir etsin, "Yaşa, senin gibisi yok!
'There is none that resemble you; may the entire world be sacrificed for a single strand of your hair!' Eşin yok, menendin yok; kâkül-i gülberglerinin tek kılına bütün acem mülkü fedadır!" desin.
As the people around them say and do such things, they will swell like a turkey.
Going back now: Geriye dönüyorum:
'This age is the age of hypocrites, the age of egotism.' "Bu çağ, münafık çağıdır, enâniyet çağıdır."
People who resemble a droplet yearn to be seen as an ocean; İnsanlar, bir damla iken, kendilerini derya görünmeye salmışlardır;
those who are like an atom have been infatuated with being seen as the sun. bir zerre iken, güneş gibi görünme sevdasına tutulmuşlardır.
And consequently, their expectations have always been so great: Ve dolayısıyla da beklentileri, hep öyle büyük olmuştur:
'May I be greeted with applause everywhere I go; the world should stand before me in respect and admiration, like they do before God.' "Gittiğimiz her yerde, alkışlarla karşılanalım; âlem, ayağa kalksın, el-pençe divan dursun, Allah karşısında durduğu gibi."
We seek refuge in God from such a thing: calling themselves 'God' is the only thing missing. Neûzu billah, bir kendilerine "Allah" demeleri kalıyor.
Pharaoh had said that about himself, for he was braver than them! Firavun, onu da demişti, çünkü bunlardan daha mert (!) idi;
He displayed his insolence explicitly and so it was apparent to Korah, to Haman, to Prophet Moses and to Prophet Harun. küstahlığını açıktan açığa ortaya koyduğundan dolayı Kârûn da biliyordu, Hâmân da biliyordu, seyyidinâ Hazreti Musa da biliyordu, Hârun da biliyordu.
But when we come to the people of today, they are the 'people of "qalalish" (treachery).' Ama günümüzdekilere gelince, bunlar, "mine'l-kalâliş".
The word 'qalalish' is an irregular plural noun borrowed from Turkish by Arabic. You can ask its meaning to those who know Arabic.
('Qalalish' is the plural form of 'qallash', namely treacherous). (Kalâliş, burada "kalleş"in çoğulu olarak kullanılıyor.)
Therefore, constantly deceiving others, treating people as pariahs; remarks such as, 'You are lower than me, you are a being that sits ten steps below me!' are part of their habit. Dolayısıyla sürekli başkalarını aldatma, kapıkulu yapma, halka -kast sistemine göre- parya nazarıyla bakma; "Sen, benden aşağıda, tâ onuncu basamakta oturan bir varlıksın!" deme, onların huylarıdır.
If someone was to get up and say, 'Touching you is a form of worship,' such people would reply, 'Thank you very much, what an appreciative person!' Böyleleri, mesela biri kalkıp da "Sana dokunmak, ibadettir!" falan, dediğinde, "Sana -Thank you very much!- teşekkür ederim; ne kadar kadirşinas bir insansın!" derler.
When they say, 'You possess all of God's Attributes,' such people would reply, 'What a grateful and appreciative person!', and no one will be able to say, 'Both these people have become unbelievers.' "Allah'ın bütün vasıflarını hâizdir!" dendiği zaman, "Aman ne kadar takdirkâr, ne kadar kadirşinassın!" mülahazası ile karşılarlar; "Yahu bunu söyleyenlerin ikisi de kâfir oldu!" diyemezler.
However, they easily impute infidelity and deviation to those who serve God and His religion around the world, migrate for the sake of God and symbolize our culture and religion. Fakat Hizmet eden, Allah rızası için dünyanın dört bir yanına yayılan, bayrağımızı, millî kültürümüzü, dinimizi ve diyanetimizi bayraklaştırmak isteyen, Rûh-u Revân-i Muhammedî'nin şehbal açmasını isteyen insanlara, çok rahatlıkla küfür ve dalalet isnat ederler.
They do not refer to individuals when talking, instead, they say, 'I doubt the religiosity of these people'. Bir yerde konuşurken, bir tek insana da demiyor, "Osman hoca!" demiyor, "Ergün hoca!" demiyor, "Reşit hoca!" demiyor, "Ben, bunların dininden şüphe ediyorum!" diyor.
They doubt the religiosity of the flag bearers of the Majestic Name of God. Nâm-ı Celîl-i İlahî'yi bayraklaştıranların dininden şüphe ediyor.
However, they do not doubt the religion of those who mock the Qur'an or those who believe that touching someone is worship. Fakat Kur'an'a "bakara-makara" diyenin dininden şüphe etmiyor; "Ona dokunmak, ibadettir!" diyenin dininden şüphe etmiyor.
Therefore, it seems to me that you can identify a hypocrite by witnessing these. Dolayısıyla -zannediyorum- bunlara bakarak, "münafık"ı okuyabilirsiniz.
You will observe and even if you are deceived one day, in the future you would not be letting yourself fall into a cascade of deception.
But despite everything, '(O believers!) God knows best who your enemies are; Ama her şeye rağmen, "Allah düşmanlarınızı pek iyi bilir.
and God suffices as Guardian and Protecting Friend, and God suffices as Helper' (An-Nisa, 4:45).
God is a sufficient for you as Protector Friend. Allah, size veli olarak yeter.
God is sufficient for you as Helper. Allah, size vekil olarak yeter.
In his litany, Abu Hasan ash-Shadhili mentions the following recitation ten times, 'God suffices as Guardian and Protecting Friend, and God suffices as Helper'. Ebu Hasan eş-Şâzilî hazretleri, kendi virdinde, "Allah size dost ve koruyucu olarak yeter" beyanının on defa tekrarını söylüyor.
I do not know the wisdom behind it, however, after he says, 'O Divine Honor, come to our aid!' He follows it with 'God suffices as Guardian and Protecting Friend, and God suffices as Helper'; repeating this sentence ten times. Onun hikmetini ben bilemem; fakat, "Ey Allah'ın gayreti, ey gayretullah, çabuk yetiş imdadımıza" dedikten sonra, müteakip iki mısranın sonunda, "Allah size dost ve koruyucu olarak yeter" diyor; on defa tekrar ediyor bunu.
God suffices as Guardian and Protecting Friend, and God suffices as Helper. Allah, size yardımcı olarak yeter; Allah, size vekil olarak yeter.
'Rely on God, embrace the struggle wholeheartedly, and yield to wisdom'. "Allah'a güven, sa'ye sarıl, hikmete râm ol
If there is a way, it must be this, I don't know of another leading to freedom' Yol varsa, budur; bilmiyorum başka çıkar yol!"
The one who says this, their vision is as deep as their spirit, their spirit is profound and boundless, the famous poet of the times, Mehmet Akif, may God have mercy on him.
A statement attributed to God's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, is as follows: Rasûl-i Ekrem (sallallâhu aleyhi ve sellem) Efendimiz'e nisbet edilen bir beyan şöyledir:
'Learn your religion from scholars; be together with wise people, and with those having a sound heart and spirit.' "Dininizi ulemadan öğreniniz, hukemâ ile hemhal olunuz, kalb ve ruh insanlarıyla içli-dışlı bulunmaya çalışınız."
Firstly, our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is the Master of Speech, and his words are the master of words.
Everything he says, in a way, is expressed with few words, expressions that have multiple meanings is well defined in Tirmidhi's works.
Tirmidhi focuses on this more than Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud as-Sijistani, Nasai and Ibn Majah. Buhârî'den, Müslim'den, Ebu Davud-i Sicistânî'den, Nesâî'den, İbn Mâce'den daha ziyade Tirmizî, bunlar üzerinde durur.
Those that study such works would know. Mütalaa etmiş olanlar, bilirler bunu.
Indeed, he, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke in a manner without over translating the truth, with few words, words with deep content.
Consequently, my mind cannot comprehend the words of his speech, yet I will express certain matters according to my capacity and perception.
'Learn your religion from religious scholars!' he commands. "Dininizi, ulemâdan öğrenin!" diyor.
Not from the scholars who possess only the knowledge of external phenomena. Ulemâ, ulemâ-i zâhir değil.
In Sadi's words, 'The real scholars are those who practice what they know'. Sâdî'nin ifadesi ile, bildiğiyle amel edene âlim denir.
A scholar is a person who internalise the things he knows, the paragraphs and verses, the pages and volumes he reads, and who directly becomes a living book. Âlim; bildiği şeyleri, okuduğu şeyleri, kitap satırlarında, paragraflarında, sayfalarında, mücelletlerinde gördüğü şeyleri tabiatına mal eden, doğrudan doğruya kitaplaşan insandır.
When people look at such people, they see how theory is translated to practice with such people. İnsanlar ona baktıkları zaman, ilmi pratiğe döktüğünü görürler.
Some say, 'I've read the works of Bukhari, Muslim, the Sunan of Abu Dawud, Al-Fiqh al-Akbar of Abu Hanifa, such-and-such book of Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad'. "Ben, Buhârî'yi, Müslim'i, Ebu Davud'un Sünen'ini okudum; Ebu Hanife'nin Fıkh-ı Ekber'ini okudum; Ebu Yusuf'un şu kitabını, İmam Muhammed'in şu kitabını okudum!" filan.
This isn't a true measure of value, however the main goal is to become as you read.
That is, if you read Imam Muhammad's works, become like him; If you read the works of Abu Hanifa, become like him; If you read Abu Yusuf's works, become like him.
This is what I mean when I say, 'becoming a book'. "Kitaplaşma" derken, esas olan budur.
And consequently, not those who look like scholars but are in fact scholars or those scholars who live as the books prescribe. Dolayısıyla "ulemâ-i zâhir" değil, esas "ulemâ-i bâtın", kitap ne diyorsa, ona göre yaşayan âlimler.
That is why Sadi, in his Gulistan says as follows: Onun için Sâdî, Gülistan'ında der ki:
'If an individual does not act according to the knowledge he has gained, that individual is deemed ignorant'. "Bir zat, okuduğu ilimlerle, o ilimlere göre, amel etmiyorsa, o, câhilin tekidir!"
Even if he has multiple degrees, he can be called an 'ignorant person with diplomas'. İsterse otuz tane diploması olsun, ona "diplomalı cahil" derler; isterse Ord.
Even if he becomes a professor, he is nothing but a larky ignorant. Prof. (ordinaryüs profesör) olsun, o, cahilin zil-zurna tekidir.
Apologies for my expression. "Zil-zurna" biraz avamca oldu; rahatsız oldunuz mu?
Some things are viewed and described not in terms of the requisite of their state, but the requisite of their appearance. Bazı şeyler, "muktezâ-i hâle" değil, "muktezâ-i zâhir"e öyle mutabık düştüğünden dolayı.
Yes, according to the Art of Eloquence, there is a difference between these two; if you use an alternative word, that word does not fully convey the intended meaning.
In this respect, when it is said, 'Learn your religion from scholars', those individuals who have internalised their knowledge should come to mind; Bu itibarla, "Dininizi, ulemâdan öğreniniz!" deyince, kitaplaşmış insanlar akla gelmelidir;
When these scholars stand before God, they stand in utmost respect and humility, with a feeling of sincerity, excitement, ardour and longing. We call them the 'distinguished scholars'. Allah huzurunda dururken, evvelâ kemerbeste-i ubudiyet ile, ihsan şuuru ile, ihlâs mülahazası ile, aşk u iştiyak heyecanı ile Allah huzurunda duran insanlar ki bunlara "ulemâ-i benâm" (seçkin, namlı, ünlü, parmakla gösterilen âlimler) denir.
They are open to the truth. Hakka, hakikate açık insanlar.
It is not just a matter of sincerity, but as expressed in the hadith of Gabriel, 'belief', 'Islam' and 'God-consciousness', or to worship God, prostrate, bow and express your servanthood to God as though you see Him or at least the consciousness that He sees you.
These are the individuals whom you should learn your religion from. İşte dininizi böyle/bu türlü ulemadan öğreniniz.
Do not be deceived by anyone's degree or diploma; that will deceive you as it does many people in our time.
But instead, look at those who pray all night till morning. Geceleri sabahlara kadar namaz kılanlara bakınız.
Those who compensate their Night Vigil if they miss it... Teheccüdünü kaçırdığı zaman, kalkıp gündüz kaza edenlere bakınız.
Actually, compensation is not required for the Night Vigil, but I know those among your friends that make up their Night Vigil if they miss it. Yok teheccüdü kaza etme mevzuu ama ben sizin arkadaşlarınızdan gece teheccüdünü kaçırınca gündüz onu kaza edenleri biliyorum; sizin arkadaşlarınızdan.
Those who stress about missing supererogatory prayers, only because it was a prayer performed by distinguished scholars. Evet, "Aman, ben bir Evvâbîn'i kaçırırım!" diye endişelenen; "Çünkü bunu ulemâ-i benâm kılıyordu.
Otherwise, if I do not practice what I say how can I talk about following the Prophetic Tradition. He, peace and blessings be upon him, would stand in prayer all night long till the morning. Yoksa ben nasıl Efendimiz'in sünnetlerine iktidâ ettiğimden bahsederim; O, bunları yapıyordu; O, sabaha kadar ayakta duruyordu.
Learn your religion from scholars who constantly try to live the way it is described in the Chapter Al-Muzzammil, by constantly reminding themselves to pass two thirds of the night or half of that, or the last third of the night, or at least a portion of the night girded ready for worship. Yahu ben de hiç olmazsa, Müzzemmil Sûresi'nde ifade buyrulduğu gibi, gecenin üçte ikisinde mi, onun yarısında mı, gecenin son üçte birinde mi, hiç olmazsa bir süre kalkıp, kemerbeste-i ubudiyet içinde, Allah karşısında, arz-ı ubudiyette bulunmalıyım" mülahazasıyla dolu olan; böyle ulemadan dininizi öğrenin.
Not from those who rarely present themselves to mosque, probably even without ablution.
Not from the ones who say, 'I can't wait for the sermon to end so that I can quickly pray and leave' during the Friday Prayer and abandon the rest of the prayer. "Bir an evvel hutbeyi bitirse de namazı kılıp ayrılsak!" diyen, hatta orada, Cuma namazlarında, Zuhr-i âhir gibi veya vaktin son sünneti gibi kısımları terk eden...
Indeed, based on the narrations from the respected scholars, such as Ibn Abidin, it is said that those who are qualified to lead must be able to lead Friday Prayers, deliver a sermon and observe the Friday Prayer in full. Ki İbn-i Âbidîn, değişik fukahâ-i kiramın büyüklerinden nakillerde bulunarak, Devlet-i Aliyye'nin hâkim olduğu, baştaki insanların Cuma kıldıracak kadar, hutbe okuyacak kadar -bir yönüyle- kıvamda bulunduğu bir dönemde, "Esasen o son sünneti kılmak da gereklidir!" diyor.
If you like, read the chapter of Friday Prayer in Ibn Abidin's works. İsterseniz bakın İbn-i Âbidîn'e, Cuma bahsine bakın.
Yes, those ignorant people with diplomas, who talk about Islamic Jurisprudence without any knowledge... Evet, Fıkıh'tan dem vuran ama Fıkıh bilmeyen o diplomalı cahiller.
They are not just ignorant or 'doubled' ignorant, but 'threefold' ignorant.
May God protect us from their evils! Allah, şerlerinden muhafaza buyursun!
It is also these people who make those in charge go completely off the rails. Serkârları, şirazeden çıkaranlar da bunlar.
They are the ones who love to break the bonds between people and watch them disperse. Tesbihin bağını koparıp, dânelerin sağa-sola saçılmasını arzu eden de bunlar.
It is also them who say, 'Vanquish them!' "Haklarından gel!" diyen de bunlar.
And there are some people who listen to them and double fold or even triple fold their tyranny. Ve bunların sözüne bakarak, birileri de zulümlerini muzaaf, hatta mük'ab hale getirerek irtikâp ediyorlar.
I beg you, do not learn the religion from such scholars. Öyle ulemadan değil; elinizi-ayağınızı öpüyorum, dininizi öyle ulemadan öğrenme değil.
Learn your religion from scholars who spend their nights in worship, fast the supererogatory fasts outside of Ramadan, never miss a Night Vigil and perform all supererogatory prayers. Gece, sabahlara kadar ibadet yapan, lâakall Pazartesi-Perşembe oruç tutan, işi, biraz daha düşük götürerek, Eyyâm-ı Bîd'de, her ay 13. gün, 14. gün, 15. günde oruç tutan, teheccüdünü kaçırmayan, Evvâbîn'i kaçırmayan, İşrâk'ını, Kuşluğunu kaçırmayan, değil beş vakit namaz, nafileleri de ihmal etmeyen...
In a divine hadith, God's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, says: Bir Kudsî hadiste buyuruyor ki Efendimiz (sallallâhu aleyhi ve sellem):
'My servant cannot draw near Me with a more pleasant act than performing obligatory deeds. "Kulum Bana, kendisine farz kıldığım şeylerden daha sevgili olan bir şeyle yaklaşamaz.
My Servant continues to come closer by performing supererogatory acts of worship until I love him.' Kulum nâfilelerle Bana yaklaşmaya devam eder; nihayet Ben onu severim.
And once I love my servant, I become his ear with which he hears, his eye with which he sees, his hand with which he grips and his foot with which he walks.' Ben kulumu sevince de artık onun işiten kulağı, gören gözü, tutan eli, yürüyen ayağı olurum."
One draws closer to God with the obligatory acts of worship. İnsan, farzlarla Allah'a yaklaşır.
And the supererogatory acts of worship correct and mend any defects and faults that may have occurred within the compulsory acts of worship, a fact expressed with the phrase 'jabran lil-nuksan'.
The phrase 'jabran lil-nuksan' means to bandage a broken bone or repair a defect. Cebren li'n-noksan, kırığı sargılama ve noksanı tamir etme manasına geliyor.
For this reason, God states: 'I become the eye with which my servant sees, the ear with which my servant hears and at the same time the mouth with which my servant speaks'.
He also says, 'the foot with which my servant walks'. Bir de "Yürüyen ayağı olurum!" diyor.
What does this mean? Ne demek?
It means: 'I will cause him to walk toward the truth'. "Onu doğruya yürütürüm Ben!
It means that that servant takes each step as God instructs.
Do not interpret these words in any other way; they are allegorical. Başka şekilde anlamayın onu; müteşâbih bunlar.
The phrases 'eye with which he sees' or 'mouth with which he speaks' are also allegorical. O "gören gözü, işiten kulağı, konuşan ağzı" ifadeleri de müteşâbih.
This refers to you overcoming your distance with God, through worship, with utmost sensitivity, bridging that divide and overcoming your farness from God, the One Who is closer to you than yourself.
Learn your religion from the distinguished scholars who have overcome their farness and drawn closer to the One Who is infinitely close. Böyle uzaklığını aşmış ve aynı zamanda yakınlardan yakın olan Zat'a yaklaşmış bulunan, ulemâ-i benâmdan dininizi öğrenin.
This is just a summary. Evet, icmal bu, icmal;
Indeed, the ones who are knowledgeable can say more. doğrusunu bilen, daha çok şey söyleyebilir burada.
As a second matter, he says; 'Associate with people of wisdom'.
The people of knowledge and wisdom... Hikmet ehli ile...
Those who are consistent in what they say; those whose past is not different to their present; whatever they have said in the past, they have said it after verifying it many times.
Not those who contradict themselves months or even days later.
Indeed, those who say today what they had said 30 years ago, because it was based on a relationship of causality. They analysed matters by correctly identifying the relevant cause, all of the outcomes resulting from that cause, and presented matters accordingly.
From this perspective, 'Learn your religion from scholars'; and similarly 'be together with wise people!'
As aforementioned, Akif says, 'Rely on God, embrace the struggle, and yield to wisdom'. Biraz evvel zikri geçen sözünde Akif'in dediği gibi, "Allah'a dayan, sa'ye sarıl, hikmete râm ol."
Be together with the wise people. Hekimler ile otur-kalk.
When I say 'wise', rather than referring to philosophers, I refer to high level thinkers, those who are able to combine the operations of head and heart. Vakıa "hekim" derken, biz, feylesofları daha ziyade, yüksek düşünce insanlarını, kalbiyle beraber kafasını çalıştıran.
Those who use their subtle faculties together with their spirits... Latife-i Rabbâniyesi ile beraber ruhunu çalıştıran.
Those who are able to channel their spirit to the horizon of the spiritual faculty known as the Secret... Ruhunu, Sır ufkuna tevcih etmesini bilen.
Those who are able to channel their spiritual faculty of Secret to the spiritual faculty known as the Hidden... Sır ufkunu, Hafi ufkuna tevcih etmesini bilen.
Those who are able to channel their spiritual faculty of Hidden to the spiritual faculty known as the Most Hidden... Hafi ufkunu, Ahfâ ufkuna tevcih etmesini bilen.
One who can turn from the circle of the Divine Names to the circle of the Divine Attributes... Esmâ dairesinden Sıfât dairesine yönelen.
We are talking about those who can ascend from the circle of the Divine Attributes to the circle of the Divine Essence. Sıfât dairesinden Zât-ı Baht dairesine yönelen insanları kastediyoruz.
Yes, associate with such wise people. İşte öyle hukemâ ile hemhâl olunuz, postnişin olunuz; onlarla oturup kalkınız.
As a result, the Master of Eloquence, our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, says, 'A person will be with whom he loves'.
Whoever you associate with, you will be resurrected with them in the Hereafter. Kiminle postnişin iseniz, aynı postta oturuyorsanız, öbür tarafta da beraber haşrolursunuz.
May God allow us to associate with such people here and in the Hereafter, Cenâb-ı Hak, öyle oturmaya, öbür tarafta da öyle haşredilmeye bizleri muvaffak eylesin.
with His grace, His bounty, His munificence. Meccânen, fazlı ile, lütfu ile, keremi ile.
May He make us be successful in this out of His own greatness, not by our own actions.
Let this be a prayer. Bu da onun duası olsun.
I gave you a headache. Başınızı ağrıttım.
The third matter: Üçüncü husus:
'Try to be close with the people of the heart and spirit!' "Kalb ve ruh insanları ile içli-dışlı bulunmaya çalışınız!"
The people of the heart and spirit... Kalb ve ruh insanları.
I tried many times to humbly explain: Çok defa âcizâne arz etmeye çalıştım:
During the time of the Pride of Humanity, everything was considered as a whole and explained that way; different institutions developed later on. Sonradan değişik müesseseler oluştu; fakat Devr-i Risâletpenâhi'de, İnsanlığın İftihar Tablosu döneminde her şey bir bütünlük içinde ele alınıyor, ifade ediliyordu.
For example, when a human was considered, it was considered based on both his physical and spiritual aspect.
The physical aspect: hands and feet, eyes and ears, tongue and lips, inner and outer side, heart, intestines, abdomen, brain, neurons, pituitary gland, thalamus, etc. Maddî anatomisi; eli-ayağı, gözü-kulağı, dili-dudağı, içi-dışı, kalbi, em'âsı (bağırsakları), batnı, beyni, nöronları, Hipofiz bezi, Talamus bezi filan.
When you consider the human from the physical perspective, these are the things you will come across. Maddî anatomisini düşündüğünüz, bunu teşrih masasına yatırdığınız zaman karşınıza çıkacak şeyler, bunlar ve bunlara benzer şeylerdir.
A human also has a heart, spirit, secret, subtle faculties, feelings and inner sensations etc.
These things will form a human's 'spiritual anatomy'. Bunlar da insanın manevî anatomisini teşkil eder.
In that sense, he says, 'the people of the heart and spirit'.
Regarding the matter of separating the heart and spirit from desires and bodily pleasures, this also comes to the attention of Bediüzzaman. Bu kalb ve ruhu, cismâniyetten ayırma mevzuuna, Hazreti Pîr-i Mugân dikkat çekiyor.
He is in the shadow of the Master of Eloquence, peace and blessings be upon him, and he is, in a secondary sense, a master of eloquence as well.
He says: Diyor ki:
'Since this is the truth; abandon the base desires and instincts, and rise to the degree of life of the heart and the spirit. "Madem hakikat böyledir; hayvaniyetten çık, cismâniyeti bırak, kalb ve ruhun derece-i hayatına yüksel!"
Because the degree of life of the heart and the spirit is on a much higher level than your carnal lives.
In a way, when you look at it from the perspective of carnal desires and pleasures, your understanding of the universe, if you can, will be limited like reading an index.
When you look at the issue with the 'eye of the heart' and the 'eye of the spirit', you see a human as an index, the universe as a book and you will bear witness that the Qur'an is in constant recitation of the universe.
Once again as he said: Yine onun dediği gibi:
'Silence. "Sus.
The Qur'an reads the universe in the vast mosque of creation. Kâinat mescid-i kebirinde Kur'an kâinatı okuyor!
Let's hear it. Onu dinleyelim.
Let's be illuminated with that light. Let us act according to its guidance, and let's read it regularly!
It is 'speech' in the true sense. Evet, söz odur ve ona derler.
The Qur'an is the truth, coming from The Ultimate Truth and Ever-Constant. It guides to the truth, spreading its light everywhere.' Hak olup, Hak'tan gelip Hak diyen, hakikati gösteren ve nuranî hikmeti neşreden odur."
The heart and the spirit... Kalb ve ruh.
We should associate with people of heart and spirit, and not those who follow their carnal desires.
Through the observatories of the heart and the spirit, if you rise from the circle of the Divine Names to the circle of the Divine Attributes, and connect yourself from the Divine Attributes to the Divine Essence, you will be ecstatic and intoxicated; you will go through 'bewilderment' and 'utmost astonishment' there. Kalb ve ruh rasathanesi ile, Esma'dan hemen Sıfât dairesine yükseldiğin, Sıfât dairesinden Zât-ı Baht mülahazasına kendini bağladığın zaman, mest ve sermest olursun; orada "hayret" yaşarsın, orada "heymân" yaşarsın, orada "dehşet" yaşarsın, orada kendinden geçersin.
Consequently, if you find these kinds of people, do not neglect spending time with them.
Yes, during the time of the Messenger of God, humans and their characteristics used to be considered as a whole.
In the era when the Qur'an was revealed to the Pride of Humanity, it used to be disseminated by him with his luminous character.
On one side, worship and obedience used to be taught; worship and obedience, that is, knowledge from the school of theology used to be taught. Bir taraftan, şekil olarak ibadet ü taat anlatılıyordu; ibadet ü taat, yani medresenin verdiği ilimler anlatılıyordu.
On the other side, the spirit of the matter used to be injected into the spirits. Bir taraftan, meselenin ruhu, ruhlara ifâza buyuruluyordu.
In addition, things we call modern sciences today used to be entrusted to minds and neurons. Bir taraftan da günümüzde fünûn-i müsbete diyebileceğimiz meseleler, zihne, dimağa, nöronlara emanet ediliyordu.
Those people used to acquire these completely, these matters used to be deemed as the 'three main elements'. O insanlar, bunları toptan alıyorlardı ki, bu meseleler, insanın "ekânim-i selâse"si, "üç uknum"u, "üç temel unsuru" (üçlü sacayağı) idi.
The life of the heart and spirit... Kalbî ve ruhî hayat...
Following these were the physical duties... Ondan sonra, bir yönüyle bedenî mükellefiyetler...
And the matters pertaining to reasoning and wisdom...
These were being practiced in that day and age, and received in action from the Guide, peace and blessings be upon him. Bunlar, o devirde, fiilen yaşandığından dolayı, Rehber'inden (sallallâhu aleyhi ve sellem) fiilen alınıyordu.
However, they have not expressed these as 'This is that, that is this and that is that!' They have practiced the truths and virtues subconsciously. Ha, "Bu, şudur; bu, şudur; bu, şudur!" denmiyordu; onlar, iç içe, hiç farkına varmadan yaşanıyordu.
A day came about where some of these practices began to be flawed. Bir gün geldi, bunlardan bazılarında kusurlar oldu.
Consequently the matter was taken to hand in the form of a 'madrasa'; it was said that 'the sciences of Religion should be undertaken there!' Dolayısıyla mesele, "medrese" şeklinde ele alındı; "Ulum-i diniye, burada tedris edilmeli!" dendi.
Up until that day, next to the madrasa, was the functioning of dervish lodges and the centres of solitary asceticism. O güne kadar, medresenin yanında aynı zamanda tekke, zâviye ve halvethanelerin fonksiyonu da edâ ediliyordu;
But one day, the time came for the madrasa and lodges split from each other. bir gün geldi, medrese ile tekke ve zâviye de birbirinden ayrıldı.
These institutions were told to look after themselves; they were divorced decisively (by expressing the divorce three times). Bu müesseselere, "Bakın başınızın çaresine, bakın başınızın çaresine!" dendi; bunlar talak-ı selâse ile tatlîk edildi.
Even not by 'three divorces', but as it is said in the Eastern Anatolia, 'from three up to nine divorces'...
The creative commands being taken into account, the book of the Universe being read in the Qur'anic lines; the understanding of the Moon, Sun, stars, atmosphere, grass, oxygen, carbon dioxide, air, water, rain, evaporation were in a way entrusted to the schools. Tekvinî emirlerin mütalaaya alınması, Kur'an'ın satırlarında kainat kitabının okunması; ayların, güneşlerin, yıldızların, zemin yüzünün, otun, ağacın, haşerâtın, oksijenin, karbondioksitin, havanın, çağlayan suların, yağan yağmurun, tebahhuratın; bütün bunların doğru okunması da bir yönüyle mektebe emanet edildi.
This divorce slowly began in the fifth century after the Hijra. Talak-ı selâse ile boşanma duygusu yavaş yavaş Hicrî beşinci asırda başladı.
When Istanbul was conquered, in a way, with the influence of power and might, it was said, 'Oh look, it could be done in that way too!', and so the slow departure and deviation of these became more and more apparent.
Later, in the last two or three centuries, they completely diverged from one another.
The dervish lodges continued as if they were inherited from father to son; the madrasa were in the hands of the religious teachers, and were entrusted to the lines and paragraphs; whereas the schools were entrusted to the thoughts of the Western philosophers or in other terms, to Materialism, Naturalism, Positivism, as if to say 'Here, these are entrusted to you!' Tekke ve zâviye, babadan miras gibi bazı kimselere miras kalmaya başladı; medrese, hocaların elinde, satırlara/paragraflara emanet edildi; mektepte, fünûn-i müsbete, sadece Batı filozoflarının düşüncelerine göre işlendi veya tâbir-i diğerle, Materyalizme, Natüralizme, Pozitivizme "Alın, bunlar size emanet!" falan dendi.
They were separated, broken apart. Ayrıldı, birbirinden koptu.
Thus, the complete and single truth which was embraced to its fullest during the time of the Last Prophet was split to pieces.
It broke apart, and so did Muslims all over the globe.
So, the way to come together once again includes 'associating with the people of the heart and the spirit'.
They will think hard, submitting to God's wisdom; they will put their heart and spirit to work in unity, and, with the permission of God, once again re-establish all that has been separated.
'For God's sake, enough with the companionship of what matters not! "Yahu yeter, Allah aşkına, bu kadar zevc-i âher!
Back then, a single case of divorce would permit a reunion, but in the past three centuries maybe thirty different cases of divorce have been observed.
Enough! For God's sake, come together!' Yeter, Allah aşkına; birleşin ne olur" diyeceklerdir.
I do not know if your generation will see this reunion.
Such is God's grace... He can do anything and everything in an instant. He can turn drops into the ocean, and atoms into the Sun. Cenâb-ı Hakk'ın inayeti, her şeyi en kısa zamanda yapabilir; damlayı derya yapar, zerreyi güneş yapar.
May God reunite these three truths with your very hands!
May He rid you of the assaults and oppression of those who act knowledgeable but are ignorant and empty! Âlim görünen, bilen görünen cahillerin tasallutundan, tahakkümünden, fikrî galebesinden sizi halâs eylesin.
